Festival of Lights
—first class view
Festival of Lights is the annual canal event. Don’t miss out!
During the Amsterdam FESTIVAL OF LIGHTS (November 30, 2023-January 21, 2024), international light artists display their artwork and illuminate the city center. The best way to view the light art along the canals is from a boat.
The Festival of Lights is one of the tem best winter festivals in Europe
—The Guardian
We follow a special route to see the best of the Light Exhibition: we go onto the Amstel River, the New Emperor’s Canal, Plantage Muidergracht, Entrepotdock, Eastern Dock and Old Rampart. We end at a the same location as started.
The captain will be your captain, host, and guide in-one and give you a unique perspective of the city.
Join us and enjoy a first-class view on the light artworks from our saloon boat!

WHAT OUR GUESTS SAY
—about the Festival of Lights tour
- We booked Captain Dave's morning boat tour based on the many good reviews and we absolutely enjoyed it. So I suggest BOOK IT as soon as you see a suitable slot! It's one of our highlights in Amsterdam. Captain Dave was funny and engaging. Made everyone feel welcome. Lots of coffee, tea, sweet bread and other drinks plus a clean toilet on the boat. You won't regret it!read moreread lessEniola Egbaiyelo29/03/24
- What a wonderful first view of Amsterdam! Jan was informative, entertaining, and answered all of our many many questions. Our choice of the 6:00 cruise was absolutely perfect. We started in daylight and ended when the lights on the bridges and in the city appeared. Jan even took a bit of a detour when our small group expressed an interest in photographing the lights in one particular canal. The boat is just beautiful, too!read moreread lessJenny Hart25/03/24
- I went on a rainy evening cruise, and it was wonderful! Captain Jan was our host and he's a thoughtful storyteller. Captain Jan wove together historical highlights, current cultural references, and often encouraged us to think about Amsterdam through multiple perspectives.
Even better, of the 12 people on my boat, 2 other guests turned out to be neighbors from a nearby town in upstate NY! We all swapped stories, pictures, and will stay connected.read moreread lessSara16/03/24 - Truly a wonderful experience, 100% recommended if you are thinking about it.
The boat itself 'de Jonckvrouw' packed a lot of history - Coupled with Captain Dave's stories as you tour around the canal, it's not difficult for this to be one of the highlights of your trip.read moreread lessLeslie Ann24/02/24

Cozy ride and super knowledgeable about the light festival art, history, and architecture. Boat is also historic, cool! The whole team loved, absolutely loved, the tour. It was one of our highlights from the trip. Jan is a very funny guy, with a lot of knowledge about what he is showing you. We can highly recommend a trip with this company, you won't regret it. Hip Hip Hooray and thanks again for the memorable trip.read moreread lessBettina Yancey21/01/24One of a kind experience. We took an evening tour of the Festival of Lights and had a wonderful time. The 90-minute time frame allowed our guide to spend more time explaining the sights and answering questions about Amsterdam and Dutch culture. We never felt rushed like the other commercial cruise boats. Our reservation included drinks and snacks on a 95-year-old well kept canal boat, and with only 10 other passengers, it felt like a nearly private tour. Great value and great memories!read moreread lessJennifer deHart13/12/23My friend and I booked Captain Dave’s Amsterdam canal cruise on a whim and it was one of the best decisions made! We’re currently here visiting from the U.S and decided a canal tour would be a wonderful and memorable way to spend our last day here…and it truly was! We had the pleasure of meeting Captain Jan who was so kind and knowledgeable of the city, I learned so much while also feeling extremely comfortable and relaxed in the warmth and coziness of the boat. The views were absolutely beautiful, we did the Festival of Lights tour in the evening and it did not disappoint. If you’re considering this tour I highly recommend it!!read moreread lessPaige LaBranche06/12/23
